HONORABLE MENTION!

My friend Nancy is a terrific cook and always baking or otherwise making something good to eat.

"Making Pumpkin Pie" seemed logical for this holiday show.

At Thanksgiving, I make a couple pies—pumpkin and apple, sometimes cherry {very Door County) or blueberry (truly Native American). We save the pumpkin seeds to toast using a recipe from when the boys were little.

Toasted Pumpkin Seeds

Pumpkin seeds
2 tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
½ teaspoon salt

  1. Preheat oven to 250 degrees.
  2. Remove stringy pieces of pulp (but do not wash).
  3. Melt butter; add Worcestershire sauce and salt.
  4. Mix with pumpkin seeds, coating well.
  5. Spread pumpkin seeds on cookie sheet.

Toast for about an hour or until brown, stirring two or three times.

PS I recently made the recipe and thought I knew it by heart, but made a mistake and used Tabasco sauce instead. A definite kick, which my husband, Henk, liked. Maybe not quite so much Tabasco next time….

SPECIAL MERIT AWARD!

This is a painting of my older son, Geoff, on his deck in Madison.

I wanted him with a book and we tried several poses, in the house and outside. This pose seemed to capture his relaxed style.

I did the painting in my studio using many photographs as reference. I was surprised how much they helped since I am very familiar with him.

Geoff viewed the painting in progress and I made color notes and some changes.
